Say What?? Yep we invaded Canada. Did you know that? Further more, we got our butts handed to us. On this day (June 18th) in 1812, the U.S. declared war on the British. The declaration was made because of the economic blockade of France by the British. Also at contention was the pressing of American seamen into the British Royal Navy against their will, along with the British support of hostile Indian tribes around the Great lakes.
In the time after President Madison's declaration of war, American forces launched a three-point invasion into Canada. They quite magnanimously failed. British forces at one point sacked Washington, D.C. The British troops burned the White House, the Capitol, and various other buildings.
Overall both sides had moments of victory. Eventually the Treaty of Ghent was signed, formally ending the War of 1812. The terms stipulated that all conquered territory was to be returned and a commission was established to settle the boundary of the United States and Canada.
So.... Next time you go making fun of those Cannooks... remember... those folks can fight. I mean come on... they play hockey. Everyone knows that hockey is just a sport used to disguise fights.
