D-Day

If you didn't know, today in 1944, Allied forces crossed the English Channel and landed at Normandy, France. The night before, Dwight D. Eisenhower, supreme commander of the allied forces in Europe ordered Operation Overlord a go.

With that order, he committed 6000 landing vessels and 176,000 men to the landing. It was and still is the largest military operation in history. The landings were brutal and many lost their lives. However, within three months the northern part of France would be set free. By May 1945, the German forces would be routed and crushed.

To those who served and to those who gave the ultimate price, Thank you.
