A new addiction

I read an article today about video game and other Internet compulsive disorders are becoming a legitimate issue with psychologist. They have actually started to call it a disorder. The latest diagnostic manual will be adding video game and Internet addiction.

The article states that the games and other Internet content stimulates the pleasure centers of our brain, making us want to come back. They also discuss how when games or Internet are taken away, those afflicted will act out in a violent manner in some cases.

It's interesting to me for a few reasons. One... I love video games... Call of Duty mostly.  Two... My son loves video games. I have to admit that when I game heavily, I get grouchy much easier. I don't like to be interrupted while I'm playing and can be rather snotty about it. The article really made me stop and think a bit.

I feel the need... the need for speed!

I don't know about you, but for me one of my top 10 peeves is slow internet. I pay Newwave Communications a chunk of change ($65.00) each month to have 15 Mb/s download and 2 Mb/s upload. Unfortunately, I don't always get what I'm paying for. What really tanks me is they ALWAYS want to blame my computer first. You must have spyware, or a virus that is slowing down your computer. They can't fathom that someone out there might actually know how to keep a clean system and has already checked for problems with his set up BEFORE calling to complain.

Tonight I'm rolling in at about 3 Mb/s on the D/L side. PATHETIC!! I've taken a page from my dad's book this go around and I sent them an email detailing my displeasure. Next I'm going to print out all my speed test and take them to the local office. I feel a $10.00 discount coming on for the next three to six months.

So how fast is your internet? I'm in PoDunk USA, so we are thrilled with 15 Mb/s. I hear that in some cities the standard is 50 or 100 Mb/s.

The Power of the Internet

This weekend my son showed me a Youtube video of a lady who had lost her apartment to a fire. She was interviewed by a local news station and she was a hoot to watch. She was a bit of a natural in front of the camera.

From that interview, some enterprising folks did a remix of her interview and put it to some catchy music. The result... MILLIONS of hits on Youtube. The result of that many Youtube hits... She is being interviewed on radio stations, she has t-shirts, she is even going to be on Jimmy Kimmel's show. I guess there's a star born every minute.
