That first race 116 years ago was the brainchild of John Graham. With the help of businessman Herbert H Holton, various routes were considered. Finally, a route that measured 24.5 miles was decided upon. Fifteen started the race and ten made it to the finish line.
In 1908 the distance was changed to the Olympic standard of 26 miles, 385 yards.
It's hard to believe that from those 15 original runners, the foot race has grown to an average of 20,000 participants.
My prayers continue to go out to the families of those lost and injured.
