Let Them Eat Cookies!

It all started in 1917, in the town of Muskogee Oklahoma. The Mistletoe Girl Scout Troop did the first cookie fund raiser. It went over so well that in 1922 the Girl Scout magazine, The American Girl, suggested cookies as a fund raiser. By 1936, the national organization began licensing commercial bakers to product the cookies.

Today up to 28 varieties are made available each year. Surprisingly, the Girl Scouts only mandate that the following be produced every year: Thin Mints, Peanut Butter Sandwich, and Shortbread. The commercial baker is allowed quite a bit of leeway as to what other varieties it produces.

At $4.00 a box you would think they wouldn't sell very many. I can get a pack of Oreo's for $2.98 and it has like 30 cookies. Most boxes of Girl Scout cookies only have 14 - 16 cookies. Evidently, it doesn't matter... in 2007 it's estimated that they sold 200 million boxes. (Shoot... I bought four of those boxes)

This year I only bought three boxes since my daughter is married and moved out. That only leaves the three of us. One box each. And I'll buy three boxes next year. Why? Because THEY ARE STINKING DELICIOUS COOKIES!! LOL
