Confederate Sub - This Ain't No Sandwich

Did you know that during the civil war, submarines were used? I did... However, I was unaware of the fact that one was found in 1995 and five years later recovered. The H.L. Hunley is currently housed at a lab in North Charleston. 

The Hunley is credited with the FIRST successful attack by a submarine. The sub sank the blockade ship Housatonic in 1864. While the attack was a success, the Hunley did not return from it's mission and all 8 members of the crew were lost. It's believed that the close proximity of the sub when the detonation occurred may have knocked out the crew, or compromised the hull.
