German Pride Wounded

Today isn't just Memorial Day. On this day (May 27th) in 1941, the German battleship Bismarck was sunk by three British warships. The end of the pride of the fleet had started on May 24th. The British battle cruiser Hook and the battleship Prince of Wales intercepted the infamous ship near Iceland.

In a ferocious battle, the Hood exploded and sank. All but three of the 1,421 crewmen were killed and the Bismarck escaped. The Bismarck was leaking fuel and headed for occupied France. On May 26th, the ship was again harassed by the British. Sighted, the ship was crippled by British aircraft. A day later, three British ships descended on the beleaguered vessel and sent her to the bottom. 2,000 Germans lost their life when the ship went down.

Thank you to the men and women who have laid down their lives for my freedoms. Thank you to those who serve today and continue to protect those freedoms.
